Ecotourism & Conservation
in Chile & Patagonia

Travelers Traversing Landscape © Debbie Thompson

By traveling with Cheesemans’ to Chile, you are actively supporting vital bird conservation efforts and contributing to the preservation of Chile’s unique biodiversity. Our local operator is a dedicated member of BirdLife’s Species Champions/Preventing Species Extinctions program, focused on safeguarding endangered bird species. They also contribute to the Adventure Travel Conservation Fund (ATCF), aiding the protection of wild spaces through these initiatives. Furthermore, they sponsor AvesChile, the Chilean Ornithologist Union, by funding the publication of their scientific journal, Revista Chilena de Ornitología. This journal unites professional ornithologists and amateur birders to promote essential research and conservation efforts across Chile. In addition, they are committed to preserving the critically endangered mainland population of the Ruddy-headed Goose, which breeds in the Magellan Straits and Tierra del Fuego. By providing financial and logistical support, our operator helps researchers assess the genetic health and population stability of this rare species. Environmental education is also central to their mission, with the production of field guides and educational materials, including the highly regarded Aves de Chile, a comprehensive bird field guide. These efforts foster a greater understanding and appreciation of the environment, encouraging locals to protect their natural heritage.

Chile’s ecotourism industry not only offers unforgettable adventures but also plays an active role in the conservation of wildlife and ecosystems. Our operator’s work in research, education, and hands-on conservation projects provides tangible benefits to Chile’s birds and wildlife, while also supporting local communities. When you travel with Cheesemans’ to Chile, you’ll not only witness abundant wildlife but experience a deep culture of knowledge and passion for environmental stewardship.

How Can You Make A Difference?

How You Can Actively Contribute

CONTRIBUTE

  • Keep an eBird list for each outing – you don’t need to track EVERY bird you see. See our Reading and Resource List for more details.
  • Take GPS-referenced wildlife and nature photos, and upload to iNaturalist. See our Reading and Resource List for more details.
Sharing

SHARE

  • Give a talk about your experience to a local wildlife or nature group or host a virtual webinar to reach a much wider audience!
  • Post your experiences on social media so others can learn more.
  • Submit a written, video, or audio testimonial for Cheesemans’ to share with future travelers.
Acting Locally

PRESERVE

  • Support local vendors if you buy memorabilia to take home.
  • Travel in small group sizes to limit the impact on the environment and wildlife.
  • Bring a reusable water bottle to refill rather than accepting plastic bottles.
  • Ask for the lodging to not replace your towels or bedding during multiple night stays.
  • Turn off lights and fans when leaving your room.
  • Bring biodegradable soap to save waterways. This can also help minimize plastic bottle waste by reducing the number of bottles hotels provide (although many hotels are switching to dispensers in the bathrooms).
