Cheesemans' Ecology Safaris

Ecotourism & Conservation
in India

Tiger and Travelers© Bablu Khan

By traveling with Cheesemans’ to India, you are joining an ecotour that offers meaningful wildlife experiences and contributes to the long-term protection of India’s ecosystems and cultural traditions. We work with local partners who prioritize environmental stewardship and community well-being, including eco-conscious lodges and camps that work to minimize impact on the land and reinvest tourism revenue directly into local economies.

Ecotourism plays a vital role in protecting India’s national parks and wildlife sanctuaries by providing sustainable funding for conservation efforts. Entrance fees and tourism-generated income help support habitat protection, anti-poaching patrols, and scientific monitoring of endangered species like Bengal tigers and snow leopards. Your visit helps fund on-the-ground organizations such as the Tiger Trust, which collaborates with park authorities and local communities to safeguard key species and corridors. India’s conservation efforts have yielded remarkable results: the most recent All India Tiger Estimation recorded approximately 3,682 tigers — nearly 75% of the world’s wild tiger population — and a new national census is currently underway, with results expected in 2027. India now operates 58 tiger reserves covering over 84,500 km². The country has also expanded its network of Ramsar wetland sites to 85, and the landmark International Big Cats Alliance, a treaty-based intergovernmental organization focused on protecting seven big cat species, was formally established in January 2025 with India as a founding member.

Equally important, ecotourism creates jobs and alternative livelihoods in rural areas where economic opportunities may be limited. Local communities benefit from employment as guides, naturalists, hospitality staff, artisans, and conservation educators—reducing pressure on natural resources and offering incentives to protect, rather than exploit, the land. Programs our tourism dollars can help support include sustainable beekeeping, tree planting, and the revival of traditional crafts, alongside community-led education and awareness campaigns.

Your journey also supports climate-conscious initiatives, such as carbon offsets with Sustainable Travel International, helping to offset your footprint and promote climate solutions. By traveling with Cheesemans’ in 2027, you are helping to build a future where wildlife thrives, landscapes are protected, and local communities are empowered as stewards of their natural heritage. Your visit also coincides with India’s deployment of AI-driven wildlife monitoring and rapid response teams with advanced tracking technology — meaning the landscapes you explore in 2027 are among the most actively protected in the country’s history.

How Can You Make A Difference?

How You Can Actively Contribute

CONTRIBUTE

  • Keep an eBird list for each outing – you don’t need to track EVERY bird you see. See our Reading and Resource List for more details.
  • Take GPS-referenced wildlife and nature photos, and upload to iNaturalist. See our Reading and Resource List for more details.
Sharing

SHARE

  • Give a talk about your experience to a local wildlife or nature group or host a virtual webinar to reach a much wider audience!
  • Post your experiences on social media so others can learn more.
  • Submit a written, video, or audio testimonial for Cheesemans’ to share with future travelers.
Acting Locally

PRESERVE

  • Support local vendors if you buy memorabilia to take home.
  • Travel in small group sizes to limit the impact on the environment and wildlife.
  • Bring a reusable water bottle to refill rather than accepting plastic bottles.
  • Ask for the lodging to not replace your towels or bedding during multiple night stays.
  • Turn off lights and fans when leaving your room.
  • Bring biodegradable soap to save waterways. This can also help minimize plastic bottle waste by reducing the number of bottles hotels provide (although many hotels are switching to dispensers in the bathrooms.).

Organizations You Can Support

They also support forest officials through fieldwork and workshops to strengthen conservation efforts.

Tiger Trust India – Tiger Trust is an NGO dedicated to conserving big cats, especially tigers, through legal capacity building for forest departments and youth awareness programs.
