Costa Rica
April 10 to 24, 2024

Kaleidoscope of Bird Diversity

In April 2024, a group of enthusiastic bird and nature lovers embarked on a vibrant adventure through the lush landscapes of Costa Rica, a small country celebrated for its rich and productive ecosystems. This trip, designed by Cheesemans’ Ecology Safaris, provided an immersive experience into various tropical environments such as the Savegre River Valley, Carara National Park, La Selva Biological Station, and Tortuguero National Park. The group enjoyed exceptional weather and increased animal activity, encountering migrating birds along the Continental Divide, monkeys, sloths, crocodiles, peccaries, and agoutis. Along the way, they experienced Costa Rica’s warm hospitality and delightful cuisine at charming lodges.

Day 1: Arrival in San José, Costa Rica

The adventure began as the group arrived in San José and spent the night at Hotel Bougainvillea. Nestled in ten acres of lush gardens, the hotel provided a serene start to the journey with opportunities to spot local birds.

Days 2-3: Savegre River Valley

The group ventured into the misty highland cloud forests of the Talamanca Mountains and the Savegre River Valley. Here, they sought the resplendent quetzal, the crown jewel of these forests. At the Savegre Lodge, they explored a private 400-hectare nature reserve, visited hummingbird feeding stations, and walked through gardens, forest trails, and along the Savegre River.

Days 4-5: Carara National Park

At Carara National Park, located by the Tarcoles River, the group enjoyed a blend of species from both the humid southern coast and the dry northern Pacific. They wandered bird-rich trails in search of tiger-herons, antbirds, and the enchanting orange-collared manakin. A highlight was the mangrove boat tour, where they spotted giant crocodiles, shorebirds, and raptors.

Day 6: Guanacaste and La Ensenada National Wildlife Refuge

The journey continued through the diverse habitats of the Guanacaste Peninsula. At La Ensenada National Wildlife Refuge, participants explored dry forests and mangroves, listened for mantled howler monkeys, and spotted mammals like white-headed capuchins and northern tamanduas. Nighttime excursions revealed Pacific screech-owls and ferruginous pygmy-owls.

Days 7-8: Arenal National Park and Volcano

Traveling to the breathtaking Arenal region, the group was awed by Costa Rica’s youngest and most active volcano. At the Arenal Observatory Lodge, they enjoyed stunning views of the volcano and Lake Arenal, and encountered tanagers, hummingbirds, and warblers. They walked through montane rainforest trails, searching for woodland birds, monkeys, and butterflies, and went owling in the evenings.

Days 9-11: Sarapiqui Riparian Zone and La Selva Biological Station

Staying at Selva Verde Lodge in the wildlife-rich Sarapiqui region, the group explored riparian zones along the Sarapiqui River in search of the endangered great green macaw. At La Selva Biological Station, they discovered an astounding variety of birds, mammals, butterflies, and reptiles, and delved into one of the premier sites for tropical ecosystem research.

Days 12-13: Tortuguero National Park on the Caribbean

The journey to Tortuguero National Park involved navigating through waterways teeming with wildlife. The group saw 320 bird species and a plethora of animals, including tiger-herons, caimans, and three species of monkeys. They also visited the Caribbean Conservation Center to learn about turtle nesting and forest ecology.

Day 14: Return to San José

Traveling back to San José through the scenic Braulio Carrillo National Park, the group enjoyed a farewell dinner and reflected on their incredible journey.
