Alaska's Prince William Sound
Prince William Sound is a premier ecosystem with a diversity of wildlife and habitat surrounded by scenic landscapes. Early May is traditionally the time of peak migration when tens of thousands of brightly colored shorebirds work their way north for the short breeding season, stopping to rest and refuel in the shallow ponds, glacial streams, and inter-tidal sloughs of the Copper River Delta. After three days of excursions throughout the Delta, surrounded by glacier-carved mountains, wildlife-rich wetlands, and lush forests, travel to remote corners of Prince William Sound on board the MV Discovery. In addition to photographing Humpback Whales and other animals from the ship, kayaking provides a great way of getting close to our pristine surroundings and observing marine mammals and birds from water level. In the spring, southeast Alaska is delightfully rich in whales and birds, adding to the dramatic landscapes for great photo opportunities under the expert leadership of professional photographer, Hugh Rose and his assistants. This trip is a truly unforgettable experience for naturalists and photographers, but it is weather dependent, as are all trips to Alaska! View our Prince William Sound and Copper River Delta video. Return to top Alaska North to South
Experience a slice of pristine Alaska and have the opportunity to see everything that makes Alaska famous - Brown Bear, Caribou, Muskoxen, Moose, and all varieties of birds, from shorebirds to raptors, amidst colorful tundra and beautiful glacier-covered mountains. Begin at Prudhoe Bay in search of the many species of wildlife that make their home here during the brief summer season. Drive south through the Brooks Range, past the Arctic Circle, crossing the mighty Yukon River, all on the Dalton Highway to Fairbanks. Spend three days in Denali National Park, the best park in North America for viewing wildlife and wildflowers. Then drive to Anchorage and further south to embark on the MV Discovery. Voyage around Prince William Sound along a route that maximizes opportunities for marine mammals and birds. Visit some of the most spectacular glacial scenery in the Northern Hemisphere and take excursions on shore to hike and view wildlife more closely. Finally, fly from Homer bound for famous Katmai National Park, where we will spend our last three days observing a high concentration of Brown Bears. Near Hallo Bay Lodge, which houses just twelve guests for an intimate experience, view bears at an amazingly close distance as they congregate for some great mating and feeding action! Return to top Alaska's Arctic
The focus of this trip will be to spend nights observing and photographing the mysterious and beautiful aurora borealis and days exploring and photographing the magnificent scenery and wildlife of the Brooks Range and the Arctic coastal plain. This time of year was chosen because the northern lights peak in activity near the equinoxes, and Polar Bears can be found in and around Kaktovik in September. In addition, winter is on the way, but temperatures are still moderate enough to allow for photography and wildlife viewing. Days are long enough to provide light for photography, while nights are also long enough for aurora to be observed. Even though it is early September, weather can be winter-like and temperatures could range significantly. Instruction on winter and Arctic wildlife photography, as well as aurora photography, will be provided through out the trip. Return to top Yellowstone National Park
Join us for a no-compromise wildlife safari into the heart of Yellowstone National Park with professional photographer Tom Murphy. This is a Cheesemans' Ecology Safaris first in our 31 years of safaris, drawing on Tom's 35 years of exploring and guiding in Yellowstone in every season and every condition. No photographer knows this landscape and its wildlife more intimately than Tom, who has chosen to work with Cheesemans' Ecology Safaris for our kindred interest in providing the most in-depth wildlife experience possible. We started with a blank slate when designing this itinerary, and designed each day and detail to bring to you the best that winter in Yellowstone has to offer. Our focus will be the iconic Yellowstone wildlife in a landscape of geysers and volcanic activity, with bison, elk, pronghorn, coyote and trumpeter swan, and with a little luck wolf. Our travels are timed to correspond with the days before the full moon January 19, for ideal geyser landscapes day and night. Return to top Monterey Bay
Join us for a full day of whalewatching in California's famous Monterey Bay. The California Coast is one of the best locations to observe seabirds such as shearwaters, jaegers, skuas, albatross, and alcids. Sea Otters play around in the kelp forests and friendly Humpback Whales often come right up to the ship! Bring your binoculars to look for Pacific White-sided, Common, and Risso's dolphins and perhaps even a Northern Right Whale Dolphin or the largest animal on the planet - the Blue Whale. These popular trips can fill quickly, so please contact us early for reservations. Return to top
