Safaris in Africa

Africa Trees
The Mad Tree

Since 1978, Doug and Gail Cheeseman of Cheesemans' Ecology Safaris have been leading small group wildlife-intensive nonsmoking safaris to East Africa, Central Africa and Southern Africa. Wildlife viewing, birding and wildlife photography are our primary objectives. Africa is where we began, forging our safari philosophy of maximum time in the field, excellence in knowledgeable and charismatic leadership, high leader/participant ratios and convivial group atmospheres. We insist on at least a window seat for each participant in pop-top vehicles. Take care for there are many groups who pack people in and who will actually tell a traveler nothing happens in the middle of the day, saying there is no reason to be in the field. We have seen many rare events over the years, cheetahs, lions and hyenas chasing down prey for example. More often than not we see this in the middle of the day, plus we can cover so much more ground, leaving the crowds behind. Picnic lunches are a delight, and especially serene atop a rocky outcrop in the midst of Serengeti vastness. With such incredible wildlife, it is no wonder our trips usually fill far in advance. Please contact us with any questions you may have.

In February and March life is vibrant in East Africa's vast green savanna habitats. Zebras, giraffes, and gazelles will be nursing young, while Wildebeest calve by the thousands. Huge flocks of European White Storks and Abdim's Storks winter in Tanzania alongside the colorful resident birds. We concentrate on the seasonal wealth of diversity in Tanzania's Southern Serengeti, and delight in the diversity of Kenya's mountains and deserts.

In August our safari is timed with the peak of migration in the Masai Mara. It is this safari we founded our company with over 25 years ago; the wildlife is so wonderful, abundant and diverse that we have never tired of this fantastic experience!

Mountain Gorillas were made famous by San Francisco born Dian Fossey who dedicated her life to their future and immortalized them in the film 'Gorillas in the Mist'. There are no more than 668 Mountain Gorillas remaining in the world today, of which 355 live in the Virunga Mountains (extinct volcanoes). In the past poaching and habitat destruction were the main cause for concern. However with publicity, tourism and education regarding the plight of the Mountain Gorilla, the authorities have been able to halt this rapid decline.

This exciting safari combines birding with game viewing in some of Africa's most remarkable wildlife areas offering vast spaces of pristine wilderness. From the ochre-colored dunes of the Namib Desert to the lily-choked backwaters of the Okavango Delta, the flamingo-studded lagoons of the Skeleton Coast to the game-filled waterholes of Etosha National Park. We've combined the numerous endemic and “special” birds of the deserts in Namibia and the Okavango in Botswana with spectacular savanna species in Botswana’s Chobe, never neglecting the bountiful scenery and prolific mammals for which these regions are famous. The safari ends in Livingstone, Zambia, where you can enjoy one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World, the magnificent Victoria Falls.
